01/ what the graphs know

Methods

The questions on the company map and the funding map are answered by the twelve statistical analyses below, methods due mostly to the spectral network-statistics school. This page is the layer underneath the maps: each panel states its finding, shows the full evidence, explains the mechanism under "how it works", and carries the citations and the caveats in the fine print. Ask the questions on the maps; check the work here. Both graphs are drawn from public information only, and the fog of war is real: most partnerships, customer deals, and investor positions are never announced, and the quiet ones are missing systematically — a well-publicized company looks better connected than an equally connected quiet one. An absent edge is a fact about the map, never about the world. Each panel's fine print says which way its statistic bends under that bias; each question's evidence drawer carries the same line.
